Ontario Council for University Lifelong Learning Newsletter - Spring 2011
spacerThe Ontario Council for University Lifelong Learning (OCULL) is a professional association for administrators and practitioners who develop and deliver degree and non-degree continuing education programs in Ontario universities. OCULL is an advocate for adult learners at Ontario universities, a collegial network, and a vehicle for professional development for its members.

The organization began with a meeting of Ontario university extension directors in 1959. In 1960, they formed the Ontario Departments of Extension and Summer Schools (ODESS), and in 1972, ODESS became the Ontario Council for University Continuing Education (OCUCE). In 1994, OCUCE became OCULL to reflect its role as a champion of lifelong learning. OCULL provides a forum for the exchange of ideas about adult education, continuing education, and distance education in Ontario universities.

Message from the President

Welcome to the Spring 2011 issue of our OCULL Newsletter. We hope you find the new web-based format of the Newsletter easy to use and its contents interesting and relevant.

As you probably know, in the March 2010 throne speech, the Premiere announced a proposal to establish an Ontario Online Institute (OOI) as part of the Open Ontario Plan. This initiative would not only increase post-secondary education for Ontarians through flexible and accessible learning opportunities but also strengthen and expand the already successful elearning initiatives taking place at Ontario universities. Since the announcement, OCULL has been actively involved in the OOI ‘engagement’ process and is prepared to be involved in the next course of action.

Did you know OCULL has several sub-committees that its members are welcome to join? See the section under Get Involved for more details.

Be sure to check out the upcoming conferences and events under Mark Your Calendar. These are exceptional venues to connect with your colleagues, share information on distance and continuing education practices, and develop new relationships.

Happy reading!

Nipissing University, Faculty of Applied and Professional Studies'
Common Book, Common Ground Project

The Faculty of Applied and Professional Studies at Nipissing University, located in North Bay, Ontario, launched a reading program for its first year students in September, 2010.  According to Dr. Rick Vanderlee, Dean of Applied and Professional Studies at Nipissing University, the purpose of the reading program was “to foster a sense of community and belonging through a common academic experience and to promote critical thinking, literacy and analysis essential to a university education.”

This inaugural program was created for students in the Nursing, Criminal Justice, Social Welfare and Business schools. Professors were asked to incorporate “Three Day Road” by Canadian author, Joseph Boyden, into their curriculum and to encourage students to engage in discussion groups, assignments, and a variety of events hosted by the university. The award winning novel, set in the James Bay region and the front lines of WWI, was chosen because of its themes of interest to the Nipissing community. The novel allowed students and professors from the different disciplines within the Faculty of Applied and Professional studies to hold an ongoing dialogue about the clash of native and non-native cultures and traditions, the impact of war, the horrors of drug addiction, and the struggles of youth in a hostile world.

The Common Book, Common Ground project stimulated students, staff and faculty to read beyond the usual assigned textbooks and to engage in spirited discussion about issues of common concern. Beyond classroom discussion, students were invited to participate in a variety of events such as online discussion groups using social media networks, a film presentation, and an essay contest.  More than 300 students and faculty and staff participated in this first common book program. Plans are underway to choose a book for the 2011-2012 academic year and to build on the success of the initial project.

For more information, contact the faculty coordinator of the program, Linda Piper, at lindap@nipissingu.ca.

spacer

If you are interested in joining OCULL, we offer three different levels of membership. Institutional membership ($250 annually) is open to Ontario universities that are members of the Council of Ontario Universities.
